House at Flat Rock

Project Overview

Set back from the street beyond dense established gardens, with the towering native bushland of Conjola National Park providing a backdrop, House at Flat Rock by architect Billy Maynard, is deeply rooted in nature.

The discreet exterior design and the restrained materiality of the building, which mirrors the colours and textures of the adjacent bushland, further enhances the building’s connection to its surroundings. The home’s refined minimalist interiors are testament to the architect’s unwavering commitment to bespoke design, meticulous craftsmanship and incredible attention to detail.

Acacia was thrilled to work in partnership with the architect and build team from Bricon Projects to design and manufacture the remarkable suite of custom timber windows and doors for this unique, complex and ultimately, extremely rewarding project.

There was very little about this signature project that did not provide a challenge. Every corner and every edge of each window unit was designed with deep thought and clear purpose, resulting in complex, bespoke designs, the likes of which had not been seen before in Australia. Details ranged from a unique mullion with a deep vee corrugation, door stiles with reverse chamfers, splayed solid timber pivot panels that disappear into the structure, kidney and teardrop shaped routered flushpulls, to a single multi use day bed/window unit which is the size of a small room.

The high Bushfire Attack Level at the rear of the property presented additional complexity to the designs, as the windows were required to meet strict planning regulations. The importance of these regulations was highlighted when during construction, the site came under threat from the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-2020. The inferno came within metres of homes in the area, which fortunately escaped damage, when so much of the surrounding region was decimated.

Collaboration was the key to this project’s success. Working closely with the architect and the build team, Acacia was able to translate the incredible ideas and artistic vision into practical, workable designs that would employ a combination of traditional joinery techniques and creative engineering solutions.

An example of this complexity was the requirement for some of the windows to include concealed steel reinforcements inside the deep reveals to ensure the longevity and structural integrity of each frame – ensuring they remain beautiful for lifetimes to come.

Detailed CAD drawings produced by our team were pivotal in ensuring the architect’s vision was captured in full, prior to manufacture. Complex programming and our state of the art 5-axis CNC routers were used to bring the designs to life.

The windows and doors are a significant feature of the home’s design. The expansive openings crafted from Queensland Spotted Gum with Walnut and Black Ash finishes, not only offer magnificent views of the bushland beyond, but at times provide habitable places that truly immerse the occupant in the landscape. Every distinctive feature of this project was the result of intricate, painstaking planning, intense collaboration and meticulous craftsmanship. It is the subtleties and incredible detail in the design that ultimately imbued it with a sense of elegance and refinement that sets it apart from all others.

The project has received numerous awards and accolades to date including:
