Maintenance & Care

Operation of windows and doors

Regular maintenance keeps your custom windows and doors operating smoothly.

  • Clean tracks regularly to remove any grit and dirt that has accumulated in the track area. Ensure any drainage slots have not become blocked.
  • Periodically apply silicone spray to the track area and the woodpile seals to ensure a free and quiet operation of the sash.
  • Check locks for satisfactory operation and adjust them to account for any settlement that may have occurred post-installation. Tighten any loose screws.
  • Maintain hardware in line with the individual manufacturer’s care and maintenance instructions.

Difficulty in operation may be due to dirt buildup, misalignment or seasonal timber movement. Clean the tracks or hinges, and ensure all hardware is secure. If the issue persists, consult our team for expert advice.

We recommend inspecting the hardware—such as hinges, handles and locks—at least twice a year. Regular checks ensure that components are functioning smoothly and can help prevent issues like misalignment or stiffness.

Yes, applying a non-corrosive lubricant, such as a silicone-based spray, to moving parts like hinges and locks can help maintain smooth operation. Avoid oil-based products as they may attract dirt and cause buildup.

Glass maintenance

Proper cleaning preserves the lifespan of glass elements and ensures they remain a sparkling showpiece.

  • Keep all surfaces clean through prompt removal of dirt. Lightly sponge off any stubborn dirt, being careful not to scratch the glass.
  • Use clean water, adding a small amount of mild detergent where necessary and rinsing thoroughly to remove residue.
  • Never use abrasive cleaners of any type as this may damage the glass.

Use a soft, lint-free cloth or a squeegee with a solution of warm water and mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could scratch the glass or damage coatings like Low-E.

For tough stains, use a non-abrasive glass cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water. Apply gently with a soft cloth, and avoid using sharp tools or scouring pads that may scratch the glass.

Yes, Low-E glass should be cleaned with non-abrasive cleaners to preserve its coating. Textured glass may require extra attention to grooves or patterns; use a soft brush to clean these areas thoroughly.

Timber protection

Timely and adequate protection of timber maintains its aesthetic appeal and dimensional stability and extends its lifespan.

  • Recoat timber surfaces every one to two years in accordance with industry and coating or paint manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Check the finish every six months, recoating and touching up as necessary.
  • The frequency and number of coats will vary depending on positioning, atmospheric conditions, thickness of existing coatings and exposure to the elements and other contaminates. Follow manufacturer guidelines for coating amounts and procedures.

We recommend reapplying a protective coating—preferably aBarrier AC465 Clear Coating—every 12-24 months, depending on exposure to elements like direct sunlight, moisture and harsh weather conditions.

Use a soft, damp cloth with mild soapy water to clean the surface, then dry it with a lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or excessive water, which could damage the coating or timber.

Regular maintenance is key. Keep timber protected with high-quality coatings, inspect periodically for signs of moisture damage, and ensure proper ventilation to minimise exposure to humidity and temperature fluctuations.
