Project Overview

Acacia was an integral partner in the Dimensions X pilot program. The aim of the pilot was to create a fully-customisable, sustainable and energy-efficient tiny home prototype. Dimensions X required a timeless architectural aesthetic within a restrained footprint, fully adaptable to a customer's specific climatic, site, personal arrangements and budgetary requirements. The materials were environmentally-friendly and durable as well as lightweight and recyclable where possible; selected to minimise the carbon footprint and contribute to an overall sensitive aesthetic.

Our task was clear: design and fabricate custom windows and doors that embodied a minimalist vision from renowned architect Peter Stutchbury, while also meeting budgetary constraints. These sleek windows and doors were to be crafted out of Australian kiln-dried select grade Blackbutt. Rapid production was essential, as was aligning our craftsmanship with the architects' design.

Beyond aesthetics, economic viability was critical. Our solution needed to marry design brilliance with cost-effectiveness, given the client's intent to replicate these modular homes for holiday accommodations.

Manufacturing the minimalist custom slider windows introduced unique challenges. Eliminating headers and relying solely on window tracks resulted in the inability to pre-test before installation. This gave rise to the need for meticulous pre-production planning. Crafting each component with utmost care, ensuring flawless functionality on installation was paramount.

Scaling up added complexity. Beyond exquisite design, our challenge was to create a tiny home blueprint for repeated production. The client's vision of a thriving tiny home initiative required innovative design for both aesthetics and economics. This dual objective compelled us to lay the groundwork for a product with potential on all fronts.

Seamless collaboration played a pivotal role in overcoming the pre-installation testing limitation. The inability to conduct tests prior to installation was circumvented through meticulous design capture and planning in shop drawings, ensuring the successful creation of the products. Balancing the demands for a high-end product, cost efficiency, and scalable design served as the guiding principles.

We applied a strategic reuse of design concepts across multiple applications, streamlining production processes by standardisation. To preserve the aesthetic integrity of the minimalist vision, the windows were positioned externally, maintaining the illusion of an unobtrusive frame. This sleek and seamless design exemplified the synergy of form and function.

The custom slider windows and indeed all windows and doors provided, operated flawlessly. The pilot initiative garnered substantial interest, laying a strong foundation for the future replication of the tiny home project.

This achievement was further underscored as the project secured the esteemed Sustainable Architecture Award, a validation of our commitment to excellence.

In its entirety, Dimensions X stands as a resounding success, seamlessly fusing modular design with cost-efficiency. Beyond its functional prowess, it has unlocked a lucrative pathway into the accommodation market, epitomising the potential for harmonising innovation and practicality.

Project Testimonial

“Always a pleasure to work with the Acacia Team. Dimensions X was a collaborative effort which would have not been possible without Acacia’s input and efforts. They were present throughout the whole process and we couldn’t be happier with the final outcome of their work. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending them for other jobs.”
